Welcome new students and parents! I will be posting pictures as soon as I get all the photo consents back. Until then, check the newsletter page for this week's newsletter. This is a picture of our bucket filling wall. Stop in and check out all the good deeds the students have done.
We researched why an egg doesn't crack when the hen sits on it. It is because the weight of the hen is distributed equally. We came across an activity to try. We read that if you squeezed an egg that it would not break. All the students and Mr. Chad, Mr. Brohl, and Mr. B. squeezed the egg to see if it would break. No one could break it by squeezing it. They may have went home and asked their dads to try it. The egg won't break unless more pressure is applied in one spot. As long as you apply equal pressure it wo
We began our chicken unit today. We put 23 eggs in the incubator and broke open one egg so we could see what the inside of the egg looks like and label the parts of the egg. The eggs should hatch in 21 days. Vocabulary: incubator, thermometer, egg turner, humidity, yolk, albumen, chalaze, shell, membrane. Be sure to ask your child about egg hatching.
We are using Doodlecast on our iPads. This is Roman's Doodlecast and the topic was "If I were a penguin...". Doodlecast for kids is easy to use and the kids really like making stories on Doodlecast. More doodlecasts will be posted on the class videos page. Be sure to check them out!
We are inviting parents to come in this Thursday, March 27th at 2:30 for reading month. Please come in and see what we've been learning and read Dr. Seuss books with us. We will have refreshments for everyone.
We made a sight word wall and used the Aurasma app to make the wall interactive. The students colored the words and made a video spelling the word. Aurasma puts the 2 images together and when the students hold the iPad over each word the video of the word being spelled pops up. Install the free Aurasma app on your phone, iPad, tablet and bring your device in when you visit our room. Many things in our room will be interactive.
We used the free app colAR Mix to turn 2D pictures into 3D images. The coloring pages are found on colarmix.com. Once the pictures are printed and colored you use the ColAR Mix app to transform the image to a 3D interactive image. These pages were sent home in their Friday folders and you can download the app on your phone, ipad, or tablet and see what happens. The coloring pages have the website on them.
We have already surpassed our reading goal and sight word goal for the month. Students earned a special lunch that we will have this Thursday. Everyone has done a great job reading and working on sight words. Good job everyone!
The students have a half day of school on Monday, March 10th and PTCs will be held in the afternoon. Please call the office if you need to reschedule your conference time. I would like to make sure I am able to meet with everyone. Also, the school is holding a can drive this month. If you can send in any canned goods, it would be appreciated. We are trying to beat the other classrooms and we have collected 51 cans this week!
For reading month, we set 2 class goals. The first class goal is to read 150 books outside of school and the second goal is to learn 150 new sight words as a class. Our first week was great! We read 27 books and learned 74 new words. Marin read the most books this week and Aric learned the most sight words this week. Good job, Aric and Marin!!!
This time of year is very exciting! The students have been taking on more of the responsibilities of the classroom. We set up a desk for the student of the day with the ELMO and some teaching supplies. The students are now doing the calendar, graphing, and using the projector and ELMO to demonstrate skills to the other students. They like to be called "assistant teachers" now instead of "student of the day". Alexis was the first "assistant teacher". She did a great job!
Ashlyn's grandma (aka Half Pint) surprised us with a visit. She brought in a birthday treat for Ashlyn and visit with us. The kids loved the visit. It was a nice break from assessments. Thank you for visiting Half Pint!
