We are going to try a new website: www.turtlediary.com. The students are going to learn to use it in class tomorrow and will be bringing home a letter explaining the site and their username and password. I have created a teacher account and I will be able to see the students' progress. Check it out and let me know what you think!

If your child has been talking about any of these 3 things, there is a reason for it. In trying to improve the student's responsibility for their learning, I have tried a few new ideas. One, we have talked about what goals are and why people make them. We have always had goals in the classroom, but we are trying them on an individual level this year. Some of the students have decided to make counting to 100 a goal and they have a reminder of the goal on their desk. We have talked about activities they can do to reach their "goal" and they can choose those activities when they get their work done and have some extra time. This was the first week of talking about goals. Hopefully, students will catch on and we will have a lot more goals made. Second, we have discussed what success is and have started to share our successes with each other. We either share in the morning what we did that was successful the day before or share our successes for the day before we go home. It just depends on how the day has gone. Third, I am using the Bruno Mars "You Can Count on Me" song as a theme for our classroom. We listed on a chart what we count on the principal for, what they can count on the teacher for and what we can count on the students for. I think it has set a nice tone for our classroom! Be sure to ask your child about these new activities in our classroom.
We had a Pete the Cat day on Friday. We made Pete the Cat, read this Pete the cat book, watched the video (I posted the video on the class video page), had a drawing lesson and wrote about Pete the Cat. I will be posting a slideshow of their writing soon.
I am not a cat fan, but I am a fan of these books. I was actually introduced to the book by the students. They told me about it and I found the video. The students were so engaged with the songs and character that I decided to have a Pete the Cat theme. Each book has a moral or message and this book's moral is: "No matter what you step in, keep on singing your song". Before Christmas break, we read "Pete the Cat Saves Christmas". The moral is "Give it your all". Many of the girls said they liked that book the best because of the song. I am posting the Pete the Cat videos to the class video page. Please be aware that this links to youtube and not everything on youtube is meant for children. I teach the students not to go on youtube at home without parent supervision. (They can't access youtube at school on their accounts.) Next week we will be "Rocking in Our School Shoes" and will be enjoying more of Pete the Cat. Watch for more postings on Pete the Cat! Last week, the NED Show came to our school. The NED show is a motivational assembly that promotes positive attitudes and encourages everyone to do their best everyday. The N stands for Never Give Up, the E stands for encourage others, and the D stands for Do your Best. The presenter told a story about Ned the character in the poster and performed yo-yo tricks that were part of the storytelling. Some kids were called up to the front to talk with the presenter, Marlee was called from our class. The kids loved the assembly and many students bought yo-yos this week from NED. The assembly was free to our school and the proceeds from the yo-yo sales goes to pay for NED to go to another school. There are more pictures on the class pictures page. Also, check out the videos page. I have uploaded pictures from our frog day and unit.
We invited parents in to share our frog research project. The students sung 5 Green and Speckled Frogs, The Tadpole Wiggle and retold the Wide-Mouth Frog Story. For families unable to attend, I will be posting videos of the Wide Mouth Frog Retelling next week. We are going to have everyone involved in a retelling and the videos will be posted on the video page next week. I have also uploaded a slideshow to the picture page. Thanks to all the parents and families who attended. The students enjoy entertaining this year.
We have been using the laptops everyday. We have use them for Language Arts and Math. We started with starfall.com and now we are using a math symbaloo created by Matt Gomez. Mr. Gomez is a kindergarten teacher who puts things on the internet to share. Thank you Mr. Gomez! Your child can access websites we use at school from home. I have put all the links to our websites on a blog. The address is: http://siansclass.blogspot.com/. Your child should be able to show you the sites we have used so far this year. Happy Computing!
I have added to the class video page and the featured writing page. Be sure to check them out!
